About BMW 524td
BMW introduced the 524td to the North American market for the 1985 and 1986 model years (although internationally it was available for much longer) with the purpose of fuel economy. Earlier years had seen the 528e which had a detuned gasoline engine, and although it did see slightly better gas mileage than other BMWs, many thought the extreme lack of power was not worth the small amount of gas it saved. The BMW 542td was launched alongside the 528e as a different alternative to help save fuel. The 524td sported a new 2.4L inline six cylinder turbodiesel engine named the M21. This was BMWs first diesel engine ever put into one of their cars. Although the 524td only produced 114 horsepower (about 7 less than the 528e) the fuel savings far outweighed that of the 528e, and at that time it was considered the quietest running and fastest diesel car available.
